Kings of Leon- Only By The Night

The Followill boys are back with their fourth major release, titled “Only By The Night.” While the Nashville, Tennessee-based Kings have not enjoyed much commercial success in the United States, thier large international fan base affords them the opportunity to produce huge studio albums. Lead singer Caled Followill told Rolling Stone, “I’m sick of being big everywhere else,” and they intend for this album to finally allow them to break into the upper echelons of United States radio rock.

 

While great, this album won’t get the Kings there. The album has a huge feel to it, with distortioned guitars characterizing many of the songs, including the single, “Sex on Fire.” This is a more advanced sound for the Kings, and gives them the sound of a true arena rock band. Perhaps the hardest rocking and by far the best track on the album is “Crawl,” with enough distortion to make even Jack White proud. The record also has songs that reflect the pure emotion that goes into making a great rock record, such as the spacey, floating “Use Somebody.”

Though “Only By The Night” is a great album, and is definitely on par with the Kings of Leon’s stellar earlier works, it will not gain them the popularity they so desire. The sound is too rough for a mainstream radio audience, who do not seem to have much taste for distortion and smart lyrics. Eagle Eye: Action-packed Thriller or Thought Provoked Political Flick…. Neither

Threatening their lives and family, she pushes Jerry and Rachel into a series of increasingly dangerous situations – using the technology of everyday life to track and control their every move. As the situation escalates, these two ordinary people become the country’s most wanted fugitives, who must work together to discover what is really happening – and more importantly why?” – (DreamWorks Pictures SKG)

I like how they concluded their synopsis, “WHY?”, and I think this is a great question to pose.  Why go see this movie?  Why waste my 10 dollars on another cheap political/thriller movie?  Luckily, I was able to see the movie for free out here in Boulder, CO, and was fortunate enough to not waste my money, only my time.

I’ve embedded a trailer bellow, and I will warn you all, that the movie I saw last night was not nearly as cool as the trailer depicts.  I’ll admit that the editors that put those trailers together duped me once again.  Eagle Eye isn’t just the action packed thriller that the trailer suggests but yet another one of these hybrid political-thrillers that seem to be flooding the box offices (Body of Lies, The Kingdom, etc.).  And let’s be serious here no one will ever match Citizen Kane, or 2001: A Space Odyssey… Oops did I spoil something???

I don’t want to go too deep into plot yet, as I want all of you who are dying to see it to have your chance, but let me just say: A.  Don’t get your hopes up, as I did, because Eagle Eye may not live up to your expectations; and B.  Just wait till you see who they casted to play the part of the mysterious woman on the phone….

100, Number of the Year?

With 95 wins on the season the Chicago Cubs have a chance to walk away from 2008 with 100 regular season wins.

With two more games against the wild card-holding New York Mets and a three game series with division rival and wild card runner-up, the Brewers, the Cubs not only have a chance to hit the hundred win mark but also to directly influence the NL playoff ballot.

Tickets to the homestand playoff effort went on sale to individuals drawn from entries submitted on http://www.Cubs.com. Although the opprotunity for first round playoff tickets has expired, there will be another opprotunity to enter for the chance to purchase NL championship tickets later this week.

It’s Always Funny

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has shown, time and time again, that it can push the envelop to extreme limits and have it always be hilarious.

FX broadcasted the first two episodes in this season’s lineup in an hour long special this past Thursday. The titles of the first two episodes are: Mac and Dennis: Manhunters and The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis. Both episodes where full of the same jaw dropping humor that fans have come to know well from the previous three seasons. I found myself laughing my ass off and I can’t wait for the new episodes. Titles included are: Mac’s Banging the Waitress, America’s Next Top Paddy’s Billboard Model Contest, and Mac and Charlie Die: Parts One and Two.

Even more exciting news, a new television show, Boldly Going Nowhere, is being developed by the creators of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Tonight it comes from Harrison and Clark on the South-side of Chicago.  whats better than true friends and hazy times?  It seems happening despite the hour. Our friend Mary Jane helps us have a good time and we settle in.  Inside this dwelling the concrete pillars line the flanks and – walls divide the different spaces. So I downloaded the word press iPod touch app off iTunes and of works pretty well. Now that I’m getting used to the wordpress tools I’m realize how well I will be able to keep this site updated in the future, in praticular, when I add more authors.

I can also upload pictures directly from my iPod. I’m very pleased.
